Hernia causes symptoms and treatment

 Hernia:



Hernia is the outpouching/protrusion of any content from its original place. Hernia commonly occurs in abdominal and pelvic regions. It occurs as congenital or acquired.

Types of Hernia:

There are many types of Hernia are present,the most common types are Inguinal Hernia,Femoral Hernia, Umbilical Hernia,Incissional Hernia and Epigastric Hernia. Rare types are Lumbar and Gluteal hernias.
When the Inguinal hernia occurs through superficial Inguinal ring, it is called Direct hernia commonly occurs in older age. Through deep Inguinal ring, it is called Indirect hernia commonly occurs in young age 

Causes:

- Lifting heavy weights ( commonly seen in weight lifters, gym freaks and workes who lifts heavy weights)
- Crushing injury or blow to the abdomen
- Hard cough
- Previous surgery
- Obesity
- Constipation
- Chronic lung diseases
- Ascites and incorrect posture
- Poor nutrition and smoking

Risk factors for Hernia:

Heavy working, weakened abdominal muscles, persistant genitals(undescended testis), Obesity.

Symptoms:

- Pain due to strangulation, which occurs before the appearance of swelling.
- Swelling/lump which disappears on lying down and appears on standing.
- Vomiting
- Constipation
- Abdominal distension

Treatment:

Surgery is the only option. Surgery is done to place the contents in original position and strengthening the abdominal wall. Commonly used surgical procedures are Herniorrhaphy and Hernioplasty. Nowadays, laparoscopic techniques are also used. It is a day procedure. You can return to work in 3 - 4 weeks.
